The Dangote Refinery IPO now closes on Tuesday, 27 October. Here’s what the extension means, and how to make the most of it.

Every football fan knows the moment. The ninety minutes are up, the whistle goes, and the match isn’t over. It’s extra time. For the players already on the pitch, it’s thirty more minutes to finish the job. For the ones still on the bench, it’s the chance they thought they had missed.

On Monday, 12 October 2026, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved an extension of the Dangote Refinery IPO from 13 October to Tuesday, 27 October 2026. If you were still on the bench, the referee has just given you extra time.

But before anybody starts whispering, “Ah ah, why did they extend it? Is the match not going well?” let’s talk football.

So, Why The Extra Time?

We understand why some people are asking. In Nigeria, when a deadline moves, we’ve learned to ask what went wrong. And after weeks of adverts, billboards and jingles (ours included), a little suspicion is only natural.

So, here’s what the company has actually said. According to Aliko Dangote, subscriptions have already passed the original target, and the extra two weeks are about supporting ongoing efforts to open the offer up in other African markets, not raising more money.

In football terms, this extra time isn’t being played because a team is losing. The match is going well, and the referee is giving more players the chance to get on the pitch.

What hasn’t changed matters just as much:

Same price: ₦525 per share.

Same minimum: 10 shares for ₦5,250, then multiples of 10.

Same offer: 4.1 billion new shares, cleared by the SEC, with the full prospectus publicly available.

An extension approved by the regulator and announced on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) is a change to the timetable. It isn’t a change to the deal. But the extension alone doesn’t tell us how the investment will perform. And it shouldn’t replace the questions every investor needs to ask before committing their money.

Who Can Benefit From The Extra Time?

1. First time investors and those still completing verification

Haven’t subscribed yet because you’re still setting up your account or if your details are still doing “processing…”, this extra time is for you. And if you don’t have a CSCS account yet, don’t worry. InvestNaija sets one up as part of your subscription.

Use this window to check that your BVN and account details are correct and complete any outstanding steps.

2. The “I’ll do it tomorrow” squad

You saw the adverts. You asked your group chat. You even opened the app, then remembered that Sunday rice does not cook itself.

If you’ve been considering the offer but haven’t made up your mind, the extension gives you more time to do your homework. Just remember that “tomorrow” is not a strategy.

3. The “wait and see” crowd

You held back to watch for warning signs. What you’ve seen since: demand above target, every step approved by the regulator, and terms that haven’t moved. If you were waiting for a signal, this is a reasonable one.

Africans outside Nigeria

This is not only a Lagos-versus-Abuja match. The issuer wants to broaden participation across African markets and expand distribution and cross-border access.

For prospective investors outside Nigeria, the important thing is to confirm whether the offer is available to them through an approved channel and what requirements apply before attempting to subscribe.

4. Parents and guardians

If you’re thinking about investing for an eligible family member or dependent, you now have enough time to open a dependant account on InvestNaija and give your child a stake in one of Africa’s largest companies.

Just make sure it fits your budget. School fees, rent and emergency savings should not be sacrificed to buy shares.

Don’t Wait For Penalties

In football, the teams that sit back in extra time and play for penalties often live to regret it. The same is true here. Three reasons not to leave it to 27 October:

1. Demand is already above target

When an offer is oversubscribed, shares are allotted according to a basis of allotment approved by the SEC, and larger applications may be scaled back. Applying early won’t get you more shares than applying late. But missing the deadline gets you none.

2. The last-minute rush hasn’t gone away. It has just moved

On opening day, traffic was so heavy that some investors couldn’t log in to their platforms. Everyone who was going to apply on 13 October is now planning to apply on 27 October. Don’t be one of them.

3. The bonus shares are for IPO investors only

Shares bought on the NGX after listing don’t qualify. On the minimum subscription of 10 shares, the two free bonus shares add up to 20% more shares for the same money. Wait until after listing, and you give that up.

The good news: the offer is open every day, including weekends. That’s two full weekends to get it done without the pressure.

The Final Whistle

The offer closes on Tuesday, 27 October. If you’ve been considering the Dangote Refinery IPO, use the additional time to understand the offer, read the prospectus, weigh the risks and decide whether the investment fits your financial plans.

You don’t have to invest because everyone else is talking about it. And you don’t have to dismiss it simply because the deadline has changed.

The Dangote Refinery IPO closes on Tuesday, 13 October. If you’re still deciding, this is for you.

Over the past three weeks, millions of Nigerians have already subscribed to the Dangote Refinery IPO . Many more are still on the fence, and their reasons are fair ones.

Some feel the publicity itself is a red flag. Some think the price is riding on high oil prices. Some don’t think a small amount is worth investing. Some plan to buy cheaper after listing, and others worry they won’t be able to sell. Every one of these questions deserves a straight answer, with numbers. Here they are.

1. “Why would Dangote want my ₦5,250?”

Short answer: it was never really about the ₦5,250. It’s about who gets to own the refinery.

The refinery could have raised this money from large institutions alone. Its $2.5 billion private placement in July was 3.7 times oversubscribed, and a pan-African investment vehicle has committed up to $400 million to this offer. Instead, the minimum was set at just 10 shares, with a target of 10 million retail shareholders, far more than any offer in Nigeria’s history. Aliko Dangote calls it “the IPO for the people.”

There’s sound business logic behind it, too. A refinery that supplies a nation’s fuel is a strategic asset. Having millions of Nigerians as part-owners gives the company a broad, loyal local shareholder base, and it gives those shareholders a direct stake in an asset that matters to everyone’s daily life. It’s a win-win partnership.

Don’t take our word for it. Check for yourself:

The offer was cleared by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and a full prospectus setting out every risk is publicly available.

It is managed by regulated issuing houses, with Chapel Hill Denham among them.

These are new shares, so the money funds the refinery’s expansion, not existing shareholders.

The shares will list on the Main Board of the Nigerian Exchange (NGX).

⚠️ The real risk is fake agents. Subscribe only through approved channels listed on the refinery’s IPO website. InvestNaija is on that list. Never send money to an individual’s account.

2. “Isn’t the price inflated by high oil prices from the wars?”

It’s a fair question, and the refinery’s own numbers are the best place to start:

Source: Dangote Refinery IPO prospectus (H1 2026 and FY 2025 figures)

Global disruption has clearly helped those margins. But consider:

The price isn’t stretched. At ₦525, the refinery is priced at roughly 12–13 times earnings. Dangote Cement, a mature business in the same group, trades at close to 18 times. Even if margins cool, there is room before the valuation looks expensive.

Most valuations sit above the offer price. Our research team values the company at up to ₦82.6 trillion, about 27% above the ₦65.2 trillion offer valuation. CardinalStone’s target is ₦688 per share. The most cautious independent view, from GTI, is ₦493, about 6% below. (Chapel Hill Denham and CardinalStone are joint issuing houses on this offer; GTI is not.)

The growth is still ahead. Management says its pricing assumes normal market conditions, not war-time margins. The proceeds help double capacity to 1.4 million barrels a day by 2029, and debt is modest. The refinery supplies Nigeria and West Africa without the cost of imports, and it runs a petrochemicals business alongside fuels.

This is also a dollar-earning business that intends to declare dividends in dollars (they may be paid in naira). For investors who have watched the exchange rate eat into their money, that is real protection.

3. “I don’t have enough money for it to be worthwhile.”

This is where the offer is quietly at its most generous, and it’s designed with you in mind. The minimum is 10 shares for ₦5,250. Under the Retail Investor Incentive Programme, IPO investors who hold at least the minimum for 12 months get one free bonus share, and a second after another 12 months. Because the bonus is capped at two shares per person, smaller investors benefit most:

On the minimum, that’s 12 shares for the price of 10, effectively about ₦437.50 per share . (The programme is subject to shareholder and regulatory approval.) ₦5,250 is a real start.

4. “I’ll wait and buy cheaper after it lists.”

It could happen; some IPOs trade below their offer price after listing. But weigh what you would give up:

No bonus shares. Only investors allotted shares in the IPO qualify. That’s up to 20% left on the table.

Few sellers. Only 3.3% of the company is on offer, much of it with long-term holders, and retail investors have a two-year reason to hold.

Many buyers. At about ₦65 trillion, the refinery would be among the largest companies on the NGX, the kind pension funds and fund managers want in their portfolios.

Waiting for a dip is a bet. Subscribing now secures ₦525 plus the bonus if you hold.

5. “With only 3.3% on offer, can I sell when I want to?”

3.3% sounds small, but it’s 4.1 billion shares worth about ₦2.15 trillion, bigger than many entire listed companies, spread across what could be millions of holders. Dangote Cement has traded for years with a free float under 13%. Smaller floats can mean sharper price swings, so treat this as a long-term investment and invest an amount you’re comfortable leaving alone.

Why waiting till the last day is a risk you don’t need to take

Subscribing today gets you the same price and allotment rules as subscribing on Tuesday. Waiting only adds risk:

The rush is real. On opening day, some investors couldn’t log in to platforms. Closing day will be busier.

Payment is in full on application. A failed transfer on the final afternoon may leave no time to retry.

First-timers need setup time. If you don’t yet have a CSCS account, or your BVN isn’t verified, give yourself room to get it done. We can help.

The good news: the offer is open every day, including this weekend, the perfect unhurried time to subscribe.

Subscribe with InvestNaija, your way

As the digital investment platform of Chapel Hill Denham, a joint issuing house on this offer, InvestNaija makes subscribing simple:

On the web: visit app.investnaija.com from any browser and follow the steps.

ℹ️ No CSCS account yet? We’ll set one up as part of your subscription.

The bottom line

Dangote Refinery is a profitable, dollar-earning company, cleared by the SEC, priced below what most valuations suggest it’s worth, and structured to reward retail investors. You don’t need to be swayed by the adverts. Look at the numbers, read the prospectus and decide for yourself. Just decide before Tuesday.

Subscribe today from as little as ₦5,250. Give yourself a stake in Nigeria’s energy future before the offer closes on 13 October 2026.- Download the InvestNaija app here– Or send “DPRP” to 0911 100 5998 on WhatsApp

Give them a stake in one of Nigeria’s most ambitious industrial stories and a powerful first lesson in ownership.

It’s 2041. Your child is grown, and you are looking through the investment account you opened for them during the Dangote Refinery Initial Public Offering (IPO) 15 years earlier.

You remember the decision.

It didn’t seem like much at the time. You could have spent the money elsewhere, waited until you had more or assumed there would always be time to invest later.

But in 2026, you decided to start. And now, looking back, you’re glad you did.

Not because anyone could have known exactly what that investment would be worth 15 years later.

You’re glad because you understood something that is easy to overlook when you’re focused on today’s expenses: time can be one of an investor’s greatest advantages.

The earlier you put money to work, the longer it has to potentially grow. And the longer any returns can themselves generate returns. That’s the power of compounding.

Now imagine another parent looking back at the same year.

Another parent heard about investing and meant to start, but assumed the amount was too small, waited for the right market moment and trusted that another opportunity would come.

And so they waited.

The difference wasn’t necessarily how much they had. It was when they started.

You can’t know today what your child’s investment will be worth in 10, 15 or 20 years. No one can.

But you can decide whether to give them the opportunity to start.

That opportunity is the Dangote Refinery IPO: a practical way to introduce your child or ward to ownership by investing in a business they may already recognise.

Your child may recognise the Dangote name from petrol stations, trucks they see around them or conversations about the company. That familiarity can make the idea of business ownership feel more concrete.

Now, through the IPO, you can introduce them to a different idea:

What if, instead of only being a consumer of products and services, they could learn what it means to own part of a business?

That’s a lesson that can stay with them long after they have outgrown their childhood gifts.

Before you invest for them, here’s what you need to know

Investing for a child or ward can sound complicated, especially if you’ve never invested in shares before. Let’s make it simple.

Do I need a CSCS account?

No. You don’t need an existing CSCS account to get started through InvestNaija. You’ll provide your BVN and bank account details, along with the required information for your child or ward. InvestNaija handles the CSCS account creation for them automatically as part of the process.

Note: Required information includes – Name, Date of birth, NIN, Gender, Mother’s Maiden Name, Passport photo and Birth certificate

How much can I invest?

The Dangote Refinery IPO is priced at ₦525 per share, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares (₦5,250). You can apply in multiples of 10 shares above that minimum.

Once you have chosen an amount and gathered the required details, subscribing for your child or ward takes just four steps.

How to Subscribe for Your Minor on InvestNaija

Open the InvestNaija App
Select the Dangote Refinery IPO icon under Quick Actions.
Click the Buy Offer tab and select the minor account option
Input your child’s details and complete payment
Submit your application before the offer closes.

Tip: You must buy the IPO shares for yourself before attempting to buy for your child or ward. This is so that the minor can be linked to your account.

Why start investing for them now?

They have time

Your child could have 10, 15 or even 20 years before they need to make major financial decisions of their own. That gives them something many adult investors don’t have: a long investment horizon.

It doesn’t guarantee returns. Shares can rise or fall, and a longer holding period does not remove investment risk. But starting early gives compounding more time to work.

They already know the company

The Dangote Refinery isn’t an abstract business they have never heard of. It’s part of a company and industry they can see around them. That makes it easier to turn an investment into a lesson: “You know this company? We own a little piece of it.”

From there, you can start talking about what a company does, how it makes money, why share prices move and what dividends mean.

They learn by owning

You can tell a child to save. You can tell them to invest. Or you can give them an investment they can actually follow.

If a dividend is paid, they can see how ownership may generate income. When the share price moves, they can see that investments do not always move in one direction. When the company announces results, they can begin connecting business performance with investment performance.

They’re learning something that a textbook can’t quite teach: money can be spent, saved, or invested.

It doesn’t have to start big

The point isn’t to invest an amount that stretches your finances. It’s to start with an amount you are comfortable committing for the long term.

10 shares ₦5,250 — A small investment, and the beginning of a much bigger conversation.

100 shares ₦52,500 — An investment your child can follow and learn from as they grow.

1,000 shares ₦525,000 — A more substantial investment for families who are comfortable committing more for the long term.

Whatever amount you choose, the principle is the same: invest only what suits your circumstances, understand the risks and give a long-term investment time to develop.

What we can’t tell you

We can’t tell you what these shares will be worth in 2036 or 2046. No one can.

The share price can go up or down after listing. The Prospectus identifies a number of factors that could affect the company’s performance and share price, including refining margins, oil prices, competition, exchange rates and broader market conditions.

So this isn’t about promising your child a particular financial outcome. It’s about giving them something potentially more valuable: a head start.

A head start in investing. A head start in understanding ownership. A head start in seeing what can happen when money is given time to work.

Twenty years from now, you may not remember what you spent that money on.

But you may remember the decision to invest it.

The decision to start when your child was young. The decision to think beyond today.

And perhaps, one day, you’ll sit with your grown-up child and look back on the decision you made for them in 2026.

And they’ll ask:

“Mum, Dad, why did you do this for me?”

You can tell them:

Because I wanted you to understand ownership and start investing earlier than I did. In October 2026, I had the opportunity to help you begin. Subscribe for DPRP IPO shares on behalf of your child, from as little as ₦5,250. Give them a stake in Nigeria’s energy future before the offer closes on 13 October 2026.- Download the InvestNaija app here– Or send “DPRP” to 0911 100 5998 on WhatsApp

From CSCS accounts to oversubscription, let’s clear up what you may have heard.

The Dangote Refinery IPO is the biggest listing Africa has seen in years, and with it has come a flood of misinformation. By now, you’ve probably seen the videos.

Nigerians walking up to Dangote fuel trucks, tapping the drivers on the shoulder and asking why their vehicle isn’t clean. Videos of new IPO subscribers acting like they’re about to call a board meeting. 😂

It’s hilarious. And honestly? We love the energy.

But behind all the jokes is something worth talking about. For many Nigerians, the Dangote Refinery IPO is their first time buying shares, and with that comes a lot of questions. Some you may have asked out loud, some you may have Googled quietly, and some you probably didn’t even know you were supposed to ask. For example: Does buying shares actually make you a co-owner of the refinery? Do you need a CSCS account before you can invest? If everyone is saying the IPO is already oversubscribed, does that mean there’s no point applying? And if you apply for 100,000 shares, do you actually get 100,000? These aren’t silly questions. They’re exactly the questions you should be asking.

So, let’s clear up some of the biggest IPO myths and misconceptions doing the rounds, and look at what the Dangote Refinery Prospectus actually says.

#1: “I Need a CSCS Account to Participate.”

Not on InvestNaija. You can subscribe using your BVN and bank account details. A CSCS account will be created for you, as part of the subsequent process. The Prospectus also provides for investors who do not have valid CSCS details at the point of application. In such cases, allotted shares may initially be held under a Registrar Identification Number (RIN) until the required CSCS details are provided.

No CSCS account is not a reason to sit this one out.

#2: “It’s Already Oversubscribed, No Point Applying.”

Unless there’s been an official announcement, treat this as rumour. And even if the offer is oversubscribed, that doesn’t mean zero allocation. The Prospectus provides for a Full Allotment Threshold, below which valid applications may be allotted in full. Above it, applications may be scaled back, not wiped out.

Oversubscription means fewer shares. Not no shares.

#3: “I Applied For 100,000 Shares, So I’ll Get 100,000 Shares.”

Not necessarily. Your application tells the issuer how many shares you’d like, your final allotment depends on overall demand. If you receive fewer shares than you applied for, the balance is refunded. Your investment reflects only what you’re actually allotted.

#4: “I’ve Paid, So I’m already a shareholder.”

Not yet. Payment confirms your application, not your allotment. The journey looks like this:

Apply → Pay → Allotment → Shares credited → Listing

You become a shareholder only once shares are validly allotted. Until then, you cannot trade them or exercise shareholder rights.

#5: “The Shares Will Trade at ₦525 After Listing.”

₦525 is the Offer Price, what you pay to subscribe. It is not a guarantee of the market price after listing. Once listed, the price moves based on supply, demand, and market sentiment. It can go above or below ₦525.

#6: “I Have to Apply Early to Get Ahead.”

The Dangote Refinery IPO is not a queue.

The offer is open until 13 October 2026. All valid applications submitted within the offer period are treated the same way.

That said, don’t leave it to the last minute. Give yourself enough time to complete your application correctly and without the pressure of a closing deadline.

#7: “If I Don’t Get all my Shares, I Lose the Rest of My Money.”

No. Your money is not forfeited.

If you apply for more shares than you are allotted, the balance is refunded to you in Naira. The Prospectus notes that the timing of refunds may vary, but the money comes back.

You apply for ➡️ 100,000 shares

You are allotted ➡️ 60,000 shares

Money refunded ➡️ For the 40,000 shares not allotted

Your final investment amount reflects only the shares you actually receive.

TL:DR

No CSCS account? You can still subscribe on InvestNaija

Oversubscription ≠ zero allocation

You receive what you’re allotted, not what you applied for

Payment confirms application, not allotment

₦525 is the Offer Price, not a promise of the future market price

The hype around this IPO is real. But hype is not a investment strategy. Understand what you’re buying, how the offer works, and the risks involved, then decide.

Because before you invest, it pays to know what you’re getting into.

Ready to subscribe? Open the InvestNaija app and apply for the Dangote Refinery IPO before the offer closes on 13 October 2026.

Africa’s biggest IPO opens Monday September 14. Here is exactly what to do to get IN.

The group chats are on fire. Your uncle who never talks about investing is asking questions. Financial Twitter has an opinion. And this time, the opportunity is real, Africa’s largest refinery, Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemical FZE, is going public, and everyone can own a piece of it.

Getting ready is not complicated. It just takes a few steps done in the right order, before the window opens, not during. This guide tells you exactly how to get in through InvestNaija by Chapel Hill Denham, when the offer opens on Monday, 14 September 2026. Taking you from ‘I’m still sorting out my account.’ to ‘I’m already IN!’.

The Dangote Refinery IPO: Key Facts

After the minimum of 10 shares, you can subscribe in multiples of 10. Proceeds will fund the refinery’s planned expansion from 700,000 to 1.4 million barrels per day.

First: What Exactly Is an IPO?

If you haven’t read our previous breakdown on what an IPO is don’t worry here’s a refresher! An IPO (Initial Public Offering) is the moment a private company opens its doors to the public and sells shares for the very first time. When you buy shares in the Dangote Refinery IPO, you are buying a small ownership stake in Africa’s largest single-train refinery. If the company grows and delivers on its expansion plans, so does the value of your investment.

In Nigeria, IPOs are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The regulator approved this offer on 4 September 2026, clearing it for public subscription. Shares will be listed on the Main Board of the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) post allotment.

How to Subscribe Through InvestNaija

Step 1: Download InvestNaija and Create Your Account

InvestNaija is your access point to this IPO and all public offerings on the Nigerian capital market. If you are not already on the app, this is where you start.

Download InvestNaija from the Apple App Store or Google Play

Tap Sign Up and enter your name, email, and phone number

Create a password and verify your email and phone

→ Download InvestNaija — free on the App Store and Google Play

Step 2 Have Your BVN Ready

Your Bank Verification Number (BVN) confirms your identity. Without it, your application will not go through.

No BVN yet? Visit any commercial bank branch with a valid ID. Enrollment is free, but do it now.

Step 3 Get Your CSCS Number

The CSCS (Central Securities Clearing System) holds and records all shares traded on the NGX. You need a CSCS account to receive your Dangote Refinery shares after allotment. If you are new to the market, InvestNaija sets it up for you.

Log into the InvestNaija app

Tap Profile, select KYC Status under Account

Scroll to CSCS Account and follow the steps

You will receive your CHN (Clearing House Number) by email within 48 hours

NB: If you are already a Chapel Hill Denham Securities (CHDS) customer, please verify your existing CSCS details.

💡 Make sure every detail matches across your ID, BVN, and InvestNaija account. Any mismatch delays your KYC approval.

Step 4 Complete Your KYC Verification

KYC (Know Your Customer) is required by the SEC for all capital market activity. It is completed entirely within the InvestNaija app. You will need your BVN, bank account details, and proof of address.

If your KYC is already approved, you are ahead. If not, do this today.

→ Complete your KYC on InvestNaija now

Step 5 Read the Prospectus

Every IPO is required by law to publish a prospectus, a document that contains everything an investor needs to know about the company before making a decision. It’s approved by the SEC before any offer opens. We know it sounds about as exciting as a plumbing manual. But this is what separates informed investors from people buying on hype. And hype, as history has shown, does not always pay out.

At minimum, look for: the company’s financials and revenue trend, what the money raised will be used for, the risk factors section (read it), and how the offer price compares to similar listed companies.

Remember: A big name on the building does not guarantee a big return on your investment. The Dangote Refinery is an extraordinary business. Read the prospectus so your decision is based on facts, not hype.

Step 6 Subscribe!

When the offer opens, select the Dangote Refinery IPO banner on the Quick Actions navigation bar, select the Offer, enter the number of units you want, and complete payment using your preferred payment option on the app.

💡 At ₦5,250 for the minimum 10 shares, the entry point is accessible. Decide your amount in advance so you are not making financial decisions under pressure.

After You Subscribe: What to Expect

Once the offer closes, the issuer and its appointed registrar, reviews all applications and determines who gets what, this is called allotment. If an IPO is oversubscribed (more applications than shares available), you may receive less than you applied for. This is normal. It means other investors wanted in too, which says something about market sentiment. You will be notified once the process is completed.

Once shares are credited to your CSCS account, you are a shareholder. On listing day, you can hold, sell, or buy more, all within the InvestNaija app. What happens on listing day varies: some stocks open above their offer price, others open flat or below. This is why you read the prospectus, so your decision is based on a thesis, not a feeling.

What If You Miss the Window?

It happens. Once shares begin trading on the NGX secondary market, they are available for purchase through the trading module of your InvestNaija app at the open market price. In some cases, the secondary market price is lower than the IPO price. In others, you will pay a premium because demand has driven it up. Either way, being account-ready means you always have options.

Your IPO Readiness Checklist

✅ InvestNaija app downloaded and account verified

✅ BVN confirmed and linked

✅ CSCS/CHN number created

✅ KYC completed and approved

✅ Prospectus read before subscribing

✅ Funds readily available to complete subscription

Every step in this guide exists so that when the Dangote Refinery IPO hits the market, you are already set up. The investors who do well through IPO cycles are the ones who were ready before the announcement.

I’m already IN.

FUND MANAGER SERIES: THE PARAMOUNT FUND (EQUITY) · NOTE 5/5

Same Sector. Two Stocks. Which One Do You Buy?

Everything comes together here: why inflation is the real enemy, why equities are the answer, and why starting, however small, is the most important decision you can make.

Favour Tewogbade · Chapel Hill Denham Management

Here is a calculation most Nigerians rarely do. Take whatever is sitting in your savings account right now. Now ask yourself: what could that amount buy five years ago?

For most people, the honest answer is: considerably more. Not because they spent it. Not because the bank lost it. But because of inflation, the quiet, patient force that erodes the value of money sitting still.

This is the problem the Paramount Equity Series has been building towards. Notes 1 to 4 gave you the framework for choosing the right investments: size, free float, liquidity, valuation, and pairs. This final note answers the bigger question: why bother investing at all, and what happens to people who do not?

WORD TO KNOW – Inflation: The rate at which prices rise over time. If inflation is 15% and your savings account pays 8%, your money is not growing. It is shrinking, losing 7% of its real purchasing power every year.

Saving Is Not Enough. Here Is Why.

For most Nigerians, the financial journey starts the same way: earn money, save money, repeat. Saving feels responsible. Disciplined. Safe. And it is, as far as it goes.

The problem is inflation does not care how responsible you are. If your money is sitting in a savings account earning 8% a year while prices are rising at over 15% annually, you are moving backwards in real terms. The number in your account is higher. But what it can actually buy is lower.

“I used to believe saving was the only way to manage finances responsibly. But through InvestNaija, I gained a deeper understanding: saving means your money sits idle, gradually losing value to inflation. Investing means your money works for you.”

— A young professional, InvestNaija user

That shift in thinking from saving to investing is the most important financial move most Nigerians never make. Not because they lack the money. Because nobody told them that saving, on its own, is a form of loss.

You Do Not Need a Big Amount to Start

One of the most persistent myths about investing in Nigeria is that you need significant capital to begin. You do not. The real requirement is not a large amount, it is consistency.

FROM OUR COMMUNITY

“Even a small amount, my ‘urgent ₦2k’, feels like the beginning of something bigger now. It could grow to ₦10,000, and eventually ₦100,000, with the right investment decisions and enough time.”

— A graduate just starting out, InvestNaija user

This is compounding at work. Small, consistent investments do not add up in a straight line — they multiply. Each return generates its own return in the next cycle. Over five years, ten years, twenty years, the difference between starting small and not starting at all becomes enormous.

WORD TO KNOW -Compounding: When returns generate further returns over time. ₦50,000 that earns 20% becomes ₦60,000. The following year it is ₦60,000, not the original ₦50,000, that earns 20%, giving you ₦72,000. Over decades, this acceleration becomes the difference between getting by and true financial independence.

What Equities Have Actually Delivered

Over any meaningful period in Nigeria, equities have been the only asset class with a consistent track record of beating inflation. Not savings accounts. Not fixed deposits. Not cash.

The Paramount Fund (Equity) has returned 590% over five years against Nigerian CPI of 173% over the same period. That is not just outperforming inflation, it is building real wealth in real Naira terms, for investors who stayed the course through all the noise along the way.

Five Notes. One Framework. One Decision.

This series has walked you through five lenses that separate disciplined investing from guesswork: size, free float, liquidity, valuation, and pairs analysis. The Paramount Fund applies all five, every day, on behalf of every investor in the fund.

But the framework only works for investors who are in it. The most expensive mistake is not choosing the wrong stock. It is waiting until you feel ready. The investors who build wealth are the ones who started before they were sure, stayed consistent when things got noisy, and let time do the rest.

FROM THE FUND MANAGER

“Compounding works. Short-term noise does not change long-term fundamentals. We weigh; we do not vote. And we invest for the long run.”

What to Take From This Series

→ Inflation is quietly eroding the value of money sitting in savings accounts every single day.

→ You do not need a large amount to start. You need consistency and time.

→ Equities, chosen with discipline, are the only asset class with a consistent track record of beating inflation in Nigeria over the long term.

→ The five lenses size, free float, liquidity, valuation, pairs are not just theory. They are a working investment framework applied daily by the Paramount Fund.

→ The most important decision is not which stock to buy. It is deciding to start.

FUND MANAGER SERIES: THE PARAMOUNT FUND (EQUITY) · NOTE 4/5

Same Sector. Two Stocks. Which One Do You Buy?

The best investment is not always the best company. Sometimes it is simply the better value at that moment. Here is the method that finds it.

Favour Tewogbade · Chapel Hill Denham Management

You need a new phone. You have done your research, set your budget, and narrowed it down to two options at the same Slot or Pointek store, a Samsung A-series and a Tecno Camon, similar cameras, similar storage, similar price. The Samsung is ₦185,000. The Tecno is ₦140,000.

You do not just look at the price. You think about battery life, which one your friends already use, software updates, resale value in a year’s time, which brand the phone repair guy on your street knows inside out. You are not asking ‘is this a good phone?’ You are asking ‘which of these two is the better deal for me right now?’

That is pairs analysis. And it is exactly how professional investors approach the Nigerian stock market.

WORD TO KNOW – Pairs Analysis: Comparing two companies in the same sector to find which offers better value at a specific moment. The goal is not to find the best company in absolute terms it is to find the better investment at the current price

Every Sector Has a Pair. Every Pair Has a Better Side.

In almost every sector of the Nigerian economy, there are two or more listed companies fighting for the same customers, operating under the same regulations, facing the same macroeconomic pressures. The question is never just ‘is this a good company?’ It is: ‘is this a better buy than the other one sitting right next to it?’

Here is what that looks like across a few of Nigeria’s key sectors:

Banking

GTCO vs Zenith Bank vs Access — same regulatory environment. Which has the stronger operations and the more attractive valuation right now?

Cement

Dangote Cement vs BUA Cement — same Nigerian construction market. Different regional footprints, different cost structures. Where is the better value per naira invested?

Telecoms

MTN Nigeria vs Airtel Africa — same service provision. Which is growing faster, and is that growth already in the price?

Energy

Seplat Energy vs Aradel Holdings — both operating locally, one dual-listed in London. Which is more efficiently priced?

When the Gap Opens Up

When two companies in the same sector trade at very different valuations, one of three things is happening. The more expensive one genuinely deserves its premium. Or the cheaper one is genuinely undervalued. Or the market has simply mispriced one of them, and time will correct it.

Finding that gap is where returns come from. Not from predicting the future. Not from tips or rumours. From the patient work of comparing two businesses that are running the same race and asking: which is running it better, and which has the market noticed yet?

Markets in the short run reward hype (attention and noise). In the long run, true value prevails. A company does not deserve to trade at twice the valuation of its nearest competitor simply because it is more talked about. Eventually, the gap closes, either because the expensive one adjusts downward, or because the undervalued one gets recognised. Either way, the investor who spotted the mispricing benefits.

The Paramount Principle – We only invest where valuation is supported by real buying and selling activity. If nobody is actively trading a stock, the price on screen tells you very little about what it is actually worth.

FROM THE FUND MANAGER

“We never buy a company in isolation. We always ask: compared to what? The comparison is where the real insight lives.”

What to Take From This Note

→ Pairs analysis compares two companies in the same sector to find which is better value right now — not which is the better business in absolute terms.

→ In almost every Nigerian sector, there are two or more listed companies competing for the same market. The question is which one deserves your money at today’s price.

→ When two comparable companies have very different valuations, the market has usually mispriced one of them. That gap is where investment opportunity lives.

→ Markets reward enthusiasm in the short term and fundamentals in the long term. Patient investors who spot the gap and wait for it to close tend to be rewarded.

💬 YOUR TURN: QUICK QUIZ

Two cement companies operate in the same Nigerian market with the same cost base. Company A’s shares have doubled this year and now trade at a premium valuation. Company B has barely moved and trades at a discount. What does a pairs analyst do?

☐ Buy Company A. Momentum means the market believes in it

☐ Investigate whether Company B is undervalued relative to Company A

☐ Avoid the sector entirely until prices stabilise

☐ Buy both equally to avoid making the wrong choice

Drop your answer in the comments below 👇🏾

Coming in Note 5 — the final note in this series: why Nigerian equities, held through a disciplined framework like this one, are the most powerful long-term wealth-building tool available to Nigerian investors today.

Thinks in pairs. Every time.

The Paramount Fund assesses relative value across every sector before committing a naira. It is one of the reasons the fund has consistently outperformed the NGX 30 Index over every measured period.

FUND MANAGER SERIES: THE PARAMOUNT FUND (EQUITY) · NOTE 3/5

Cheap Price. Or Good Value?

Price and value are two very different things. Confusing them is one of the most expensive mistakes an investor can make.

Favour Tewogbade · Chapel Hill Denham Management

Nigerians are some of the sharpest negotiators in the world. Walk through Balogun market, Onitsha main market, Wuse market, or any major market in the country and you will see it, the quick mental maths, the counter-offer, the walk-away that almost always brings the seller back. We know how to find value.

But transfer that same instinct to the stock market and something goes wrong. On the market, we see a stock at ₦8 and another at ₦500, and the ₦8 one feels like the bargain. It rarely is.

The difference between a cheap price and good value is the most important thing this note will teach you.

WORD TO KNOW – NGX: Valuation: What a company is actually worth compared to what you are paying for it. A share price tells you the cost. Valuation tells you whether that cost makes sense. Two completely different things.

Two Fabric Sellers. One Price That Makes Sense.

Picture two fabric sellers in Balogun market. The first sits at the front of the market, surrounded by forty other sellers all competing for the same customers. If she prices too high, the next stall gets the sale. Her price is honest because the market forces it to be.

The second seller is tucked away at the back where foot traffic is thin. Maybe five customers a day. No competition nearby. She can charge what she likes not because her fabric is better, but because nobody is there to challenge her. Is her higher price a sign of quality? No. It is a sign that the market has not tested it.

This is exactly how share prices work on the NGX. Companies whose shares trade in high volumes every day have prices kept honest by thousands of buyers and sellers. Companies whose shares barely trade can stay expensive indefinitely not because the business is worth more, but because no real market exists to correct the price.

Here is the surprising part: Nigeria’s largest, most recognisable companies are often the most reasonably priced. It is the small, obscure stocks, the ones that barely trade, that frequently carry the most inflated valuations.

Why the ‘Cheap’ Stock Is Often the Expensive One

Think about it this way. A stock that barely trades has almost no buyers and sellers. So who sets the price? In practice, nobody, it just sits where it last traded, weeks or months ago, with no real market to challenge it. That price might look low in naira terms. But measured against what the company actually earns or owns, it can be expensive.

Meanwhile a stock like GTCO or Zenith Bank trades millions of units every single day. Thousands of informed investors, people who have read the accounts, done the maths, and are risking real money, are constantly agreeing on a price. That price reflects reality much more accurately.

Professional investors call this price discovery: the process by which a fair price is found through real buying and selling. Without it, a stock’s price is little more than a number on a screen.

WORD TO KNOW – Value Trap: A stock that looks cheap because the share price is low, but is actually expensive relative to what the business earns or owns. It is one of the most common traps on the NGX and one of the hardest to recover from once you are in it. The Paramount Principle We only invest where valuation is supported by real buying and selling activity. If nobody is actively trading a stock, the price on screen tells you very little about what it is actually worth.

FROM THE FUND MANAGER

“The Nigerian market regularly misprices companies. We look for that gap, but only where the price is set by a real market, not by the absence of one.”

What to Take From This Note

→ A low share price does not mean a stock is cheap. Value is what you get for what you pay, not the number on the screen.

→ Shares that trade actively every day have honest prices, kept in check by thousands of real buyers and sellers.

→ Thinly traded stocks can look cheap in naira terms but be wildly expensive relative to what the business actually earns or owns.

→ Nigeria’s largest, most liquid companies are often the most reasonably priced, which is the opposite of what most retail investors expect.

→ Before you buy because a price looks low, ask yourself: is this genuinely good value, or is it just a number nobody has tested in a while?

The Paramount Principle Free float is the gateway to liquidity, and liquidity is the gateway to investibility. If a company cannot pass this test, we do not invest, regardless of how attractive the business looks on paper.

💬 YOUR TURN: QUICK QUIZ

Two stocks. Company A is ₦400 per share, actively traded daily, owned by a large institution. Company B is ₦12 per share, barely trades, held mostly by the founding family. Which is more likely to be genuinely good value?

☐ Company B — ₦12 is much cheaper than ₦400

☐ Company A — active trading means the price reflects reality

☐ They are the same — share price is the only thing that matters

☐ Cannot tell from the information given

Drop your answer in the comments below 👇🏾

Coming in Note 4: once you know a stock is large, liquid, and fairly priced, there is one final question if two companies are in the same sector, which one do you actually buy? Here is how professionals decide.

Seeks good value in Nigeria’s most actively traded companies.

The Paramount Fund only invests where prices are set by real markets. That discipline is what keeps the portfolio away from value traps, and towards genuine opportunity.

FUND MANAGER SERIES: THE PARAMOUNT FUND (EQUITY) · NOTE 2/5

The Number Most Investors, Never Check Before Buying.

A company can be worth hundreds of billions of naira and still be almost impossible to invest in. Here is the concept that explains why.

Favour Tewogbade · Chapel Hill Denham Management

You know that feeling when you spot a shop with a beautiful display, walk in full of excitement, and the assistant tells you everything in the window is reserved or sold out? The price tags are real. The products exist. But none of it is available to you.

That experience has a direct equivalent in the Nigerian stock market. A company can carry a headline valuation of hundreds of billions of naira and still have very little of itself available for you to buy. Understanding why is what this note is about.

WORD TO KNOW – NGX: Free Float: The percentage of a company’s total shares that are genuinely available for public trading. Shares held by the founding family, a parent company, the government, or a long-term anchor investor are excluded. Free float is what is left, the slice you can actually buy and sell.

68% of Nigeria’s Stock Market Is Locked Away

Every listed company has a certain number of shares in existence. But not all of those shares are available for public trading. Across the top 30 companies on the NGX, the average free float is approximately 32%. That means on average, 68% of each company’s shares are held by insiders and anchor investors who do not trade.

The range is striking. Some companies on the NGX have free floats close to 99% — almost entirely in public hands with active daily trading. Others have free floats as low as 2% or 3%, meaning the shares quoted on your screen are almost never actually available to buy in any meaningful quantity.

Think of it like a block of flats in Ikoyi.: The developer keeps 25 units for long-term rental. A family owns another 15 and is not selling. Only 10 units are on the market. The building is worth a lot on paper, but the pool available to you is far smaller than it appears. That is free float in a nutshell.

What This Means When You Try to Sell

Free float is not just a buying problem. It is a selling problem. And selling is where most investors discover the trap too late.

WORD TO KNOW – NGX: Liquidity: The ability to buy or sell shares at or near the quoted price, in a reasonable quantity, without moving the market against yourself. High liquidity means you can get in and out quickly at a fair price. Low liquidity means you may be stuck, or worse, your own selling pushes the price down before you can exit.

Free float and liquidity move together almost perfectly on the NGX, the correlation between the two is approximately 92%. This is not a coincidence. If only a small proportion of a company’s shares can be traded, daily transaction volumes in those shares will naturally be small. The price you see on your screen for a low-free-float stock may not be the price you can actually transact at.

The Paramount Principle Free float is the gateway to liquidity, and liquidity is the gateway to investibility. If a company cannot pass this test, we do not invest, regardless of how attractive the business looks on paper.

The Reordering Nobody Talks About

Here is something that will change how you look at the Nigerian stock market. When you rank NGX companies by headline market cap, the top names are well known. When you re-rank them by free float-adjusted market cap, that is what is actually investible, the order changes significantly.

The three largest companies by headline market cap rank third, eighth and eleventh once adjusted for free float. The businesses most often cited as Nigeria’s biggest are not necessarily the most accessible or the most investible. And in investing, accessibility is everything.

FROM THE FUND MANAGER: “We do not just ask how big a company is. We ask how much of it is actually available to investors. Sometimes the answer to that second question changes everything.”

What to Take From This Note:

Free float is the percentage of shares actually available for public trading. It is not the same as market cap.

→ On average, 68% of shares in the top 30 NGX companies are locked away by insiders and anchor investors.

→ A company with a low free float can be almost impossible to invest in meaningfully, regardless of how good the business looks.

→ Adjusting for free float reorders Nigeria’s biggest companies significantly. Famous names do not always lead on investibility.

→ At the Paramount Fund, free float is the gateway test. Fail it, and we move on regardless of how attractive the business looks on paper.

💬 YOUR TURN: QUICK QUIZ

A company has a market cap of ₦200 billion but a free float of only 5%. What is the value of shares you can actually buy?

☐ ₦200 billion — the full market cap

☐ ₦10 billion — the free float portion only

☐ ₦190 billion — everything except the founder’s shares

☐ It depends on the share price on the day

Drop your answer in the comments below 👇🏾

Coming in Note 3: once you know a company is large and its shares actually trade, the next question is whether you are paying the right price. The answer in Nigeria often surprises investors.

Paramount Fund (Equity) Only holds positions where shares genuinely trade.

Free float discipline is built into every investment decision at the Paramount Fund. It protects investors in good markets and in difficult ones.

FUND MANAGER SERIES: THE PARAMOUNT FUND (EQUITY) · NOTE 1/5

Bigger Isn’t Always Better. But Size Matters.

What professional investors look at before they buy a stock and why the share price is almost never the first thing they check.

Favour Tewogbade · Chapel Hill Denham Management

Picture two businesses. The first is the provision store in your neighbourhood, the kind that knows your name, lets you buy on credit, and has been there fifteen years. The second is a company like Justrite or Ebeano: hundreds of staff, branches in multiple states, millions of customers every month. Both are real businesses. Both have loyal customers. But if the economy tightens and people pull back on spending, which one do you think weathers it better?

Most people instinctively pick the larger one. And they are right. That same instinct is exactly where professional investors start when they look at the stock market (NGX).

Nigeria’s stock market has a total value of approximately $116.98 billion. That is an impressive number it makes the NGX one of the largest equity markets in sub-Saharan Africa. But if you stop at the headline, you will miss the reality underneath it.

WORD TO KNOW – NGX: Nigerian Exchange Group — Nigeria’s main stock exchange where shares of listed companies are bought and sold. Also called the Nigerian Exchange or the stock market.

What ‘Size’ Actually Means on the Stock Market

When investors talk about the size of a listed company, they are not talking about the number of employees or the size of the head office. They are talking about Market Capitalisation, usually shortened to market cap. Take the share price and multiply it by the total number of shares in existence. The result tells you what the market believes the entire company is worth today.

WORD TO KNOW – Market Capitalisation (Market Cap): The total value of a company as priced by the stock market. If a company has 500 million shares and each share costs ₦200, the market cap is ₦100 billion. Think of it as the market’s answer to the question: what is this entire business worth right now? It is a measure of scale, not quality.

The important thing to understand is that market cap is not the same as profit, revenue, or how well the company is actually run. It is a measure of scale. A starting point, not a verdict.

A Surprising Fact About the Nigerian Stock Market

Most people assume the NGX is a fairly level playing field. Around 130 companies listed, all contributing their share to the market. The reality is very different.

70% of the NGX’s total value is held by just 10 companies The bottom 100 companies share less than 5% of the total FIGURE 1: Market Capitalisation – all companies are not equal

Think about what that means. One in ten companies, not even a full handful, controls the vast majority of the market. The bottom hundred companies, by contrast, share less than 5% between them.

Think of it like Oshodi market. Hundreds of traders, but a handful control the prime spots at the entrance, run the biggest stalls, and do the majority of the daily turnover. The rest are further back, smaller, and see far less traffic. The NGX is structured the same way. Knowing which stalls are at the front is half the battle.

Why Larger Companies Tend to Hold Up Better

Nigeria’s economy moves in cycles that most Nigerians know intimately. Fuel subsidy removal. Naira devaluation. Interest rates climbing. Inflation eating into purchasing power. These events do not discriminate between large companies and small ones, but they do not hit them equally either.

Better access to funding: when banks tighten lending, large companies still have options. They can issue bonds, raise equity, or negotiate facilities that smaller businesses simply cannot access.

Resilience when things get hard: A large company with deep reserves and a diversified customer base can absorb a difficult quarter without collapsing. A smaller company may not survive it. For investors, that staying power protects your capital.

More experienced management: Companies that have grown to scale generally have leadership teams that have navigated at least one crisis, one regulatory shift, one competitive threat.

Shares that actually trade: This is the one most retail investors miss. Larger companies tend to have more of their shares available to buy and sell in the open market. We go deeper on this concept called free float in the next note.

But Bigger Does Not Automatically Mean Better

Here is where we need to be straight with you. Size is the starting point of our analysis at the Paramount Fund (Equity), not the conclusion. A large company is not automatically a good investment. A small company is not automatically a bad one.

What size does is narrow the field. Think of it like house hunting in Lagos. Before you start visiting properties, you decide which areas are worth your attention: Ogudu, Gbagada, Maryland, Ikeja GRA, Island (Victoria Island, Lekki, Ikoyi), maybe Surulere. You are not saying those neighbourhoods guarantee a good deal. You are saying they meet a minimum threshold worth your attention. Size does exactly that for stocks. It sets the neighbourhood.

FROM THE FUND MANAGER: “Size doesn’t determine whether we invest. It helps determine where we start looking. It is the filter before the filter.”

The Share Price Trap Most Investors Fall Into

Before your next trade, consider this: a ₦500 share is not more expensive than a ₦20 share in any meaningful sense. The price per share on its own tells you almost nothing. What matters is the size and quality of the whole business behind it.

WORD TO KNOW- The NGX 30: The thirty largest and most liquid companies on the Nigerian Exchange. Used as a benchmark a way to measure whether an investment is doing better or worse than Nigeria’s top companies overall.

Imagine two properties in Lagos. One is listed at ₦25 million in Ikorodu. The other is ₦250 million on the Island. Can you say which one is the better deal just from the price? Of course not. You need to know the size, location, condition, and rental income. Only then does price mean anything. Stocks work exactly the same way. The price you see on screen is just the starting point. What matters is the value underneath it.

The Paramount Principle: We begin every investment decision with size. Not because large companies are automatically great investments, but because their scale gives us a foundation from which to assess everything else.

What to Take From This Note

➡️ Market cap is the total value the market assigns to a company. It is a measure of scale, not quality.

➡️ Ten companies account for roughly 70% of the NGX’s total value. The exchange is far more concentrated than most people realise.

➡️ Large companies have real structural advantages: better funding access, stronger resilience, and shares that actually trade.

➡️ Size is the starting point of professional analysis, not the conclusion. It narrows the field. It does not make the decision.

➡️ A ₦500 share is not more expensive than a ₦20 share. Share price alone is one of the most misleading numbers in investing.

💬 YOUR TURN! QUICK QUIZ

In your opinion, why does size matter most when choosing a stock?

☐ Larger companies always make more profit

☐ Size signals quality, resilience, and shares that actually trade

☐ Small companies are more exciting and grow faster

☐ Size is just a vanity metric, it doesn’t affect returns

Drop your answer in the comments below 👇🏾

Coming in Note 2: once you know a company is large enough to consider, the next question is how much of it you can actually buy and sell. The answer may surprise you.
